TIPS FOR THE CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE OF WOOD FLOORING

Wood floors bring an earthy warm feel to the house. Besides the aesthetic factor wood floors are gaining popularity due to their being green in nature. Woodfloors look beautiful alongside with being durable and strong. If one chooses to install wooden flooring, one must also understand how to clean and maintain it.

Depending on the type of wooden flooring, here are some valuable tips which would help you to keep the floor clean and looking new. These factors would help not only to maintain the floor but would also increase the longevity of the floor.

Laminate Wood Flooring

For Laminate wood flooring the vacuum cleaner or the flipper mop is very efficient to remove the dust from the floor. In case some food or liquid is spilled on the floor and forms a stubborn stain then a dampened moist cloth should be used to remove it and thereafter wipe it with dry cloth to completely devoid the moisture from the surface.

Other important factors to keep in mind for the maintenance of the wooden flooring and saving it from getting mucky, loosing luster and increasing its life are:

  • Maintain the right temperature and humidity which will ensure a long and healthy life to the wood floors.
  • Avoid the use of oil, wax or any other furniture spray.
  • Save your wooden flooring from steam cleaning. Steam cleaning is meant for tile, linoleum, and vinyl floors and if done on a wood floor, it may leave the floor looking dull.
  • Never use ammonia, alkaline products or any other abrasive cleaners on wood floors. These products can make your floor look luster less, dull and can induce scratches.
  • Place the soft doormats and rugs to avoid dirt and debris at bay.
  • Use of glue felt pads to the legs of furniture and chairs avoids scratches on the flooring when objects are moved. Periodically examine the pads for wear and tear and replace them, when needed. Avoid rolling chairs with casters on the finished surface. Put them on rugs or Plexiglas chair mats. Place floor protectors under narrow casters, or replace them with wide rubber or flexible polyurethane casters.
  • Do not drag furniture or heavy objects across the finished surface. Lift if any furniture has to be moved.
  • Protect wood surfaces from direct sunlight by using blinds or curtains. Prolonged or repeated exposure to bright light can change the color of wood.

Taking all the above precautions and cleaning it with care can keep your floors looking beautiful and lustrous for longer period.

Here’s Exactly How To Maintain Wood Floors

Every season brings new problems for your hardwood floorsWinter comes with snow, ice, and salt, spring brings rain and dirt, summer adds on chlorine and salt water, and fall brings more dirt and leaves. Despite all the upkeep, though, wood floors are simply too stunning to skip. This is exactly what your hardwood floor maintenance routine should look like, according to the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA). Yes, they exist, and you had better listen to their advice if you want to maintain your floors for years to come.

Clean Spills Immediately

Use a dry or slightly damp cloth to immediately wipe up anything you spill, avoiding wet or steam mops, which the NWFA says will cause more damage over time. Because wood swells and shrinks depending on moisture, both on it and in the air, it is important to keep humidity levels down to avoid cupping, splitting, and gapping of the wood. The best way to prevent these issues are to clean up spills as soon as they occur, to keep your home’s temperature between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (also between 30 to 50 percent humidity), and ban wet shoes from the house. They’re kinda gross, anyway.

Use Furniture Pads

Scratches are some of the toughest problems to solve in wood floors. While some scratches are inevitable, others are definitely preventable. One of the best ways to prevent them is to add furniture pads to the legs of your chairs, sofas, tables, etc.
